When you look at at the original product your eye can see detail at a resolution which cannot be captured by either film or digital cameras.
Original Image
As in this graphic, the image information that is captured by either the film or the digital camera is "compressed." In other words either the film or the digital capture must be forced to recreate the original scene with less information and still maintain a full range of information from the highlights to the shadows.
To further compound the problem if you wish to print the image you must further compress (convert) the RGB information into CMYK information and still "faithfully" re-create the original scene.
RGB (Scan or Digital Photo)
CMYK Conversion
Once you have made the decision to print then the CMYK information must be turned into film and proofs then the film will be used to create plates on the press and the image will be printed.
It was very simple to say the above. Yet, each step you take if not done with care and professionalism can be an invitation for disaster.
